Nice but I wonder how many hard working professors were passed up for her to get this position.

^^None. She is more than qualified for the position as a regular schmegular person.

Congrats to Phylicia Rashad, she smart, hard working and more than qualified to maintain this position at her former university. All the best to her.

Yasssss. I met her and her designer one day when they came into the place I worked at in the fashion district. She was very nice.

And in other news Phylicia is still fine as hell

I'm with you on this, Ella. Celebrities often cut lines and it's terrible for people who have worked years to get a spot that's taken by someone famous. I usually see it with singers turned into bad actors.

11:51 but she previously worked at the university, chadwick was one of her students. the amount of attention and donors she'll bring to the department is a huge win for the school. To have one of your most celebrated alumna return home is major! Congrats!

I understand, but other's have worked just as hard, and probably harder. I doubt she was the worthiest recipient of this position.

She is more than qualified. She studied at the institution and has worked with them throughout the years. She has actually studied dance, music, theatre, and is a trained actor. Her career has spanned longer than many of the tenure folks and she doesn't just know the theory...she has applied it. Good for her!

Over the years I am sure she has made financial contribution. Schools are hurting for students coins. I would rather take a class with someone like her than Mr/Ms "I worked hard for this position but I have no Tv or Movie experience." She has clout and connections to help a gifted student.

I don't doubt she's qualified. My problem is privileged people taking jobs that others rightfully deserve because they've worked longer and harder for the position. It happens to Black folk all the time and it's most annoying (to me) when we do it to ourselves.

I like Phylicia but celebrity worship is a mental illness. You dumb asses on here disagreeing with Alma don't know what it's like for a Black person trying to navigate the job market in academia. There are many Blacks more qualified than her but they'll never get a high position at Howard, let alone at a regular predominantly White University. Most universities don't hire Blacks for full tenure as professors, deans, etc. because of racism. 90% of academia is White baby boomers and Gen X'ers; the rest are foreigners with thick ass accents teaching difficult courses that students struggle in because they don't understand what the hell the foreign teachers are saying in the lectures. They will hire an Indian or Nigerian with low pronunciation before an African American who speaks eloquently and has top qualifications.

Blacks are limited to adjunct which doesn’t pay shit and many of them have Masters and PhD and a mountain of student loan debt. They're lucky to get an assistant professor position.

If Phylicia wasn't famous, she would be with the rest of the Black people scrambling for a college position. Universities have become big businesses that only care about money and clout. They don't give a fuck about helping hard working students.

I despise celebrity culture.

And before you all attack me, I'm a Masters level Black grad who is devastated by how fucking racist academia is with their hiring.

Alma, This is 1:04. Don't listen to these idiots in this comment section. You are speaking truth. The people in here attacking you probably don't even have anything beyond a high school diploma. And if they do they probably got a degree that they ain’t doing shit with. They are ignorant. They don't understand what you're saying because they're sheep brainwashed by a celebrity.

Phylicia have some qualification but she could have her own acting school or preforming arts school. She can afford it. If she were more humble, she would've turned down that dean position and helped scout a more qualified Black person who's struggling to pay off their student loan debt. Black grads have the highest amount of student loan debt because we aren't hired at the rate of Whites and foreigners. I know Africans who speak intermediate level English getting positions quicker in academia, engineering,
medicine, etc. than African Americans. The only Black people given passes are those with money or to level connections. The only reason my brother got an adjunct position was because the school wanted diversity. The white hiring manager blatantly told him (were looking for a Black person). That's how fucking racist it is.

Phylicia is intelligent and beautiful. But at the end of the day, she's a celebrity with money and they are all narcissists and selfish.

Thank you and good luck with your career and any student loans you may have to pay off.

To the Karen's in the comment section....

Phylicia Rashad graduated Howard magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She has a laundry list of Broadway credits in addition to her celebrity in film and television.

She put in a lifetime of work, this position was earned the old fashion way and it is well deserved.

Maybe anon's shitty hatin' attitude kept her from those sought after academia positions. I have a friend who is a phd holding professor at Purdue. As soon as she got her phd she got a professorship so there goes your theory it's so hard for every black person to achieve that. She's a black female with a short afro and no one held her back.
Phylicia deserved her job and she gives no fucks about some hatin loser who couldn't do the same.

Great points 1.12pm

No one is hating on Claire. Just wondering if she wasn't a celebrity would she be able to become a Dean with a Bachelor degree and some acting credits.

I hope she teaches those students how not to get their panties in a bunch when someone doesn't have the same thought pattern. Geeze whiz

Elma and others are wrong and ignorant to the fact
that Phylicia is a multifaceted individual, not just a celebrity! She is an educator, well educated and a celebrity who worked damn hard at Howard University. She is not a one dimensional individual like you guys to try to place her. She worked as a Lecturer and Adjunct Professor for many years. I know because she was teaching there while I was in Graduate School at Howard U years ago. She holds Howard near and dear to her heart. I have also witnessed her participate on Howard University's board and help raise lots of funds for them. She was very upset when they cut the fine Arts school out. Now that they have revamped it, she can teach and open more doors to the students she teach because she has the education and connections to do so. Forget all that another educated qualified Professor could do it. Phylicia is the best qualified person, she has the skills, network and knowledge how to get all done. Regular Tenure Professor will only teach theory, the network to get the student in the big league upon graduation will probably be lacking. So the Elma and the rest of you crying heffas take that whining mess somewhere else.

@ 3.34

I wish I could have thanked you for shedding some light on Ms Rashard. Work on your delivery so it can be received better next time. 😉

2:38 are you really that dumb? 67 comments answering you and you still with the dumb sh1t. This leads me to believe you have absolutely no reading comprehension skills whatsoever and/or you simply can't accept that you are incorrect on your assertion.

Alma & Elsa sounds like the only people in here with some sense. @3:34 Obviously your Howard education didn't teach you manners and etiquette.

Why ya'll gotta be so mean to each other? I actually enjoyed reading both contrarian views on Mrs. Rashad's hiring as a Howard University Dean of Fine Arts.

However, Anon 3:34pm clarified that this wasn't Rashad's first rodeo at Howard University as an academic professional. Rashad basically received a promotion once the College of Fine Arts was reestablished.

Congrats!

Up you mighty race of autochthons!

I attended an HBCU and a guy I dated worked at Morehouse. Y'all have no idea how bad this kind of thing actually can be. Sure, she's been an adjunct professor. That doesn't mean she'll be okay as a dean. Deans do more than just attend parades and wave. They are over staffing, budgeting, and overall accreditation compliance. I'm not knocking Ms. Rashad, but I've seen people personally get burned out and pissed off over having jobs in academia and getting a boss who has no clue what they're doing. This move is up there with giving honorary doctorates. Let's leave the position of dean to the professionals, please.

This is 3:34, apologies to Ella and anyone else I insulted in here. I should not have done that...you're absolutely right Ella, my delivery was poor and I'm sorry. This is not an excuse, but it's the passion I have for Howard University and just see things differently through a different lens due to my experience while there. While I was in Doctorate Program the Professors said I couldn't speak about opening a business if I wanted to pursue my doctorate for teaching and become a researcher. I didn't agree and left. I think we can do it all and should be able learn how as matriculating students at HU. I really hate when we stick each other in a box. I think skills, practical experience, knowledge and theory will prepare us better. I left Howard highly educated and was able to apply the theory and worked well for companies but to actual run the company I created was an entire different story. To me, the curriculum in our Universities needs to change. This is probably reason why I'm joyful for the choice of Ms. Rashad. She can do something different and new. I just want us to not box ourselves in boxes anymore and know we need the entire package in this World. leadership skills, Theory and Practice. Not just theory alone. We are smart, strong individuals, it can be done.

4:11 Bitch when you have a degree you dont use a broom ho. Unlike yourself having to use that toilet brush and cleaning cart. Bitch you really are insane. Always coaigning yourself.
Listen bitch get over it. You will never be me. Go buy some personality and a brain so you can offer objective commentary and not just be a deranged stalker all day.
