Thandiwe Newton Talks About Prejudice She Receives From African American Women

British actress Thandiwe Newton talks about the struggle she faces as a light skin actress, and admits most of her grief comes from her American American peers...

In an emotional interview Thandiwe apologizes to dark skin actresses for being chosen for roles over them and explains how badly it hurts to cause pain for and not be accepted by women who look like her own mother.

Thandiwe then goes on to describe her confusion over being considered dark skin Black in Europe but perceived as a light skin enemy by Black American women.

Some black American women. Not all.

I said what in the tragic mulatto privilege HELL IS THIS? She didn't refuse any of these roles--you're crying after you've benefited?

and what's with the "w" in her name? is this a new thing?

After all these years this is the first time I've ever noticed a W in her first name. Anyway, I didn't think this video gave enough context because I don't know what prompted her comments. But I will say I get tired of hearing from mixed race people who loudly proclaim all the injustices they face from dark-skinned Black women, yet they're quiet as a mouse when it comes to how they're treated by White women. Is she suggesting that in her entire career she's only been ostracized and mistreated by Black women? That's what I got from watching this.

Non-ambiguous, brown, or darker complected Black women are constantly being demonized as aggressors, and yet when we speak up about our trauma we're told to suck it up and quit complaining. Or we're told we're being too sensitive or that we need to get over it because slavery's over. Shit's annoying AF.

The fact is people get shitted on no matter what their complexion is: light-skin, dark-skin, medium or mixed race, we all have a bone to pick with someone and we all have to deal with BS just for being born "Black." So her taking this moment to specifically target women who are darker than her, and to cry in an interview about not being treated well by them, is very disheartening to me because I actually like her as an actress.

Thandie with a W has every right to air her grievances and share her own personal trauma but I wish she and other mixed women like her brought the same energy and were as equally vocal about what White folks put them through. She benefited greatly from being a biracial woman in Hollywood and I assure you not one single Black woman was able to stop her paper or dull her shine. Wake me up when she starts talking about all the crap she had to put up with to get White Hollywood's approval and shed tears over all the times white folks discriminated against her. She should go get some therapy if she hasn't already. Pushing 50 and still crying about being teased like she's still in grade school tells me a lot.

@11:23 According to GOOGLE and THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER (April 06,2021). The full name of the Emmy and BAFTA-winning British actress, born in London to a white British father and a Zimbabwean mother, is Melanie Thandiwe Newton. She said her name was misspelled in the credits to her first film, 1991’s Flirting, also starring Nicole Kidman and Noah Taylor. As a result, Thandie Newton stuck with the actress for the past three decades. - It looks like she reclaimed the spelling of Thandiwe around that time.

She has knowingly and intentionally taken roles that should have been given to dark-skin actresses yet she's here apologizing for white people who chose her for the job. And at the same time she wants to be validated by Black women. Next.

I’m like everybody else. Where the hell that “W” come from? Her name was always Thandie Newton. And Google says her real name is Melanie

I've always liked her. I think she's a good actress. Half o

I keep telling dark skin black women, it ain’t the light skin black women that’s a threat and taking over everything, it’s the pale skin mixed, white and Hispanic women. Hollywood and Dark skin black men put them on a high pedestal

@12:14 & Ms mac

Facts.

There's the "leaves" and then there's the "root". The "root" , which is what Thandiwe is describing, is the biproduct of racism. Darker toned (or as ms Mac described it " non-ambiguous") black women didn't create those insecurities, and they don't create images to purposely exclude themselves, or other brown skinned women. The same industry that Thandiwe has benefited from, is in control of the "root" of the problem; racism. And I have no doubt that biracial ppl in the UK struggle - because unlike the U.S. there's not a huge diverse melanated group of ppl. But I'm just tired of actresses of color in the UK complaining about the U.S. That yt actor, Joshua something, and his wife, who's a dark skinned model, Jodie Turner? Anyway, she's another UK actress who complains about black Americans - but won't complain enough to turn down a check role playing a black American smh.

GTFOH!! You are NOT dark-skinned in the UK. You are mixed race and you get just as much hate there for your skin tone there too! Have a very close friend from London who is mixed race and she got hell, growing up, for it.
She must have grown up around all white people then if she didn't. I hate this colourist shit. I am a dark skinned black woman an never hated on lighter skinned black women. I see beauty in all shades black. Had a high yellow friend growing up that got all the boys over me and never got jealous. I noticed I never wanted the ones that wanted her. Only a shallow man would choose a woman for her skin tone. Now tits and ass, OK, but skin tone? Self hating negros that are insecure. I DO NOT get attracted to insecure men. Alpha all day!!!

So who is accessing her of stealing their man (her husband is white)?

Halle has never even said no stupid mess like this. Has Mrs Newton taking on that many roles that she is viewed as a threat.

Taraji and Gabby are darker than she is and dominant Hollywood more than she does. She could have told this to her therapist. Seems like the issue is within her. White guilt is real.

Can't we all just get along. We are in the same fight for equality. Stop the color tone issues.

I'm so sick of these Neanderthal mix, feeling their lightness is to be praised and if you're not impressed, somethings wrong with you. It's a sickness, guess what I'm a true 'brown skinned woman who has some Neanderthal lineage. Tells me my relative was possible a victim. These lightbrights need a mind check.

@12:32, I hear you but Jodie Turner is from Maryland.

As a mixed race woman with a Black mom and White father, I was raised in the Black community and I don't know anything about the White world per say. Never felt I missed anything either. I love my life but yes we have some DEMONS in the Black community too. Anyway, as you can see in this thread some Black women are as evil as Klansmen and will share in the lake of fire right along with them. Black folks want the right to be the only victims and quite frankly the entire world is sick of it. Whoopi tried it and they quickly snatched her for trying to define racism based on her experience as if Blacks are the only people who have suffered discrimination. Professional victims. Wow, there are some DEMONS on this post. lol.

My question is, "Who in the hell left the gate open?" lol Thandie should be like me and look at it for what it is, JEALOUSLY based on them wanting to be wanted by Whites and hating mixed folks because they think Whites adore light skin. Thandie their issue is in their minds and has nothing to do with you. Thandie just not from here and so she doesn't know how to get up with another woman. I will check a broad real quick and will whoop her @ss even quicker.

Thandie is half African and Half White, but her DNA is far more Black than any Black American. She only has 1 generation of white in her but Black Americans have multiple white generations. Plus, Thandie is royalty, screw what people think. Thandie learn when heffers are jealous, smile and keep moving. You are blessed. King Solomon was mixed too and God Himself said he was the wisest and richest man to ever live. You think Lena Horne didn't experience hateful @ss sistas? Ethel Waters was very cruel to her. You think Dorothy Dandridge didn't catch hell? Just know Black Americans aren't really Black, at least not to real Africans. lol Mixed folks hating on mixed folks is really what it is. As for the one who said tragic mullatto, biatch the only thing tragic is that Sherman Hemsley you hiding up under that weave. Not all Black Americans are as ignorant as some of these posters. lol The MAJORITY of Black American is PURE LOVE. Thandie you are so pretty that a lot of women are jealous like they were of Sophia Lauren, Mae West, Marlyn Monroe, Iman, Tyra Banks, and Josephine Baker. Women are just catty as heck. Be Blessed everyone!

I noticed that light skin and mixed black who want to express the racism they get from Black women always get shot down or ignored.
Everyone deserves to be heard.

@1:52, It's like When Whoopi tried to pull that mess on the Jews and say it wasn't racism that got them killed because it was White killing Whites when in reality Whites didn't view them as White just like they never viewed Mixed people as White. That same dismissive attitude Whoopi tried to pull with the Jews is projected unto Mixed people by Black folks all the time. We were slaves, raped, tortured, sold, and killed too but let Black folks tell it, we had it good despite there being LAWS created banning our birth. There were no laws banning Black life but there were laws banning our lives! They were called miscegenation laws and our parents couldn't marry until darn near 1970. Also, Black folks lie and say we were in the big house and favored but when you look back on every freaking picture and every freaking historical document, you see that being in the big house was NOT based on complexion but was based on who would snitch. Notice that all of those pics had dark skinned Black folks and you NEVER saw mixed people on Big House pictures. We have always been at the forefront of Civil Rights from Frederick Douglas and Bob Marley to countless others. Blacks are not the only people who have faced discrimination, we mixed folks just don't sit around complaining, and we move on with love in our hearts.

SOMEONE IS LOOKING FOR ATTENTION!! SO LET'S TALK ABOUT DEGRADING BLACK WOMEN!! BITCH HO DIT IN THE CORNER!!

She couldn't wait till March to say this?

"we mixed folks just don't sit around complaining, and we move on with love in our hearts."

what the fuck does this mean? Tell that to Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, MLK, Stokely Carmichael, Marcus Garvey and countless other Black folks. And both of Malcolm X's parents were Black. No one here is saying that mixed people didn't contribute to the Civil Rights movement, in fact that's not even the topic in question. But let's not negate the fact that mixed people have benefited from the privilege of lighter skin. Even with the civil rights argument, Rosa Parks got credit for refusing to sit in the back when Claudette Colvin did it first but did not get recognition because she was darker. Let's not rewrite history to negate Black people's advancement to their own movement.

Anonymous said...

@1:52, how is she getting ignored or shot down? She can complain and people can snap back just like anybody else. She is not that special, and neither is anybody else who look like her. And to 1:46, I caught a headache trying to read all that nonsense you wrote. Try again boo boo. @2:57, you are on point.

The tragic mulatto bit is getting old. Thandiwe - and other lighter toned black women - need to understand that y'all's issue is with WHITE PEOPLE - not BLACK PEOPLE!!!! White people created and enforced the color structure - NOT BLACK PEOPLE!!! White people purposely pitted lighter blacks against darker blacks because WE OUTNUMBERED THEM!!!! The division of US has always worked to WHITE AMERIKKKA (& beyond) agenda. Always. So for Thandiwe to make these absurd blanket statements about black and/or darker toned women is disingenuous at best - because as a black woman in the UK no one hates her more than yt women. So she can miss me with this tragic mulatto horse shit.

{Warning Triggering comment} When I was 18,I was told by a white friend{friend? not!} that, "you are not like them." She said this with fear and anger in her face expression. She made me feel like what she was saying was very important. As a lite skinned woman ,this made me feel good and feel afraid as a black woman at the same time. Afraid that there is something wrong with being black....This is when I first realized that its "safer/better" to be lite...Tragic Mulatto theory is very true...

It's always a big joke that black folks have to announce that they're BLACK on a black blog. When I read that statement, it shouts TROLLS.
RWS is full of mulattos, half breeds, biracial folks, and hateful white racist that comment on here every day. All the REAL black folks who use to comment on here have left and now I know why. RWS has become gentrified. It won't be too long before RWS turns into another stormfront, yahoo, AOL. and the rest of the racist blogs and websites.

WOW!! Massa really did a number on some of you Americans of African descent..Yup, they got you good! You readily accept being called "Black" which happens to be one of the most derogatory words in the english dictonary, yet you despise being referred to, by anything that is remotely close to your ancestral origins.

LOL Talk about self hate!!..It's no wonder a lot of you have mental issues.

This mixed raced British woman is mocking black women. It is 'Black History Month' so therefore extra care and consideration must be employed to help keep us down and depressed; can't ever have dark skinned black females feeling too good now. Calling herself dark skinned was intended to do just that, take the shine off.

If she is considered dark skinned (in any format at all) then what hope is there for you? You can almost hear her saying: 'happy black history month babe'...

This Clown!!
She does not go into detail about the racist mistreatment she and her mother especially received in the UK, but she wants to conflate that with dark skin black women treating her worse than anyone else. What BS, with her weak ass!!

She has received so many opportunities from black creatives in this country from Oprah to Tyler Perry.
What opportunities has she reciprocated to dark skin black women or black people or black people in the industry for that matter?

She is just trying to gatekeep her position as preference amongst the white studio heads, as she is seeing black women create and star in their own vehicles.

Dark skin black women never had a problem with her, she is just projecting her own insecurities and internalized self-hate onto dark skin women, whereby making them the scapegoat for the oppression and abuse she's received from white people, white men especially.

She doesn't want to call a thing a thing because that would mean she would be calling out men that look like her father and husband, and people who give her the bulk of her opportunities.

Sunny said...

This Clown!!

She has received so many opportunities from black creatives from Oprah (who referred to her and Kimberly Ellise as her daughters) and Tyler Perry. Even Eddie Murphy put her in that bullshit ass Norbit.

What opportunities has she provided to dark skin black women, or any black people in the industry for that matter?

She did not go into detail about the racism that she and her mother (especially) experienced in the UK.

Dark Skin black women are not even thinking about her.

She is just trying to use black women as the scapegoats to deflect from the abuse and discrimination she has received from white people, white men especially, who look like her father and her husband.

As many have suggested, she needs to go to a psychoanalyst to deal with her deep seeded self-hate.

She is getting nervous, now that there are so many black women creating and starring in their own projects, she is trying to secure her position as the preference amongst the white studio executives for available acting jobs.

What a Weak Soul!!!
