Kelis Explains Renaissance Sample Beef

Yesterday, after the track-list for Beyoncé's new Renaissance album revealed a music sample from Kelis, Kelis left a few angry comments aimed at Beyoncé [click here if you missed that].

Kelis explains why she's so upset...

In a series of videos posted on Instagram Kelis explains she's not angry with Beyoncé per se, though she does not take back what she said, Kelis is more upset with the disrespectful music industry as a whole and because nobody let her know her song was being used, even though she no longer owns the publishing rights, that she claims were stolen by Pharrell.

Love you Kelis

Would she be saying that if it was Adele who sampled her song or a lessor artist like Normani? Because now she's saying Rhianna also stole from her.

TBH you and Beyonce both stole that sing/scream style (I hate you/Ring the alarm) from Janet "What about" from the Velet Rope album. You don't see Janet beefing, she's still out here eating.

I love the quirky black girl from Harlem. She definitely came out the box with a unique style. She's really mad at Pharell for stealing her heart & her works & now acting like he don't know her. (She saw him a couple yrs ago & the n66a gave a a head nod(YIKES) She should've been took Neptunes to court. But i say.play dirty, make a sneaker called "Equality" amd keep your foot on Pharrell's neck!!!
Robyn S only sang "Show me Love" but was thankful bc she's booked again!

she is speaking nothing but Facts & Truths - her hair is so faboulous!!

She looks GOODT in these vids.....that top is FIYA!

She's speaking facts and it is disturbing as a creator to have someone "be inspired" by your style and content without giving you credit. But Kelis, you were in such a privileged position to protect your brand and try to get your masters when you were married to Nas. What a missed opportunity!!

Y'all need to know...they steal songs. Puffy/P-Diddy got rich off of "sampling"
All "sampling" is stealing somebody elses music!
Chic sued the snot out of Sugar Hill Gang! And that opened the door to Artist suing folks for stealing their song "GOOD TIMES".
Kelis will sue cause no one got the rights to the song, and then get paid big money $$.

Nas prolly like....we could've been bought your masters baby.
Ciara's husband purchased all her masters 2yrs ago.

I try not to be the language police but “we could’ve been bought”?

When is Beyoncé going to be acknowledged as a thief in mainstream media? I remember some years ago old Beyoncé was on Good Morning America and Tobin Roberts said u inspire me too. So I know she knows we know she’s a darn kleptomaniac. This woman’s whole career is based on her stealing off other artists

Anonymous said...

Yeah Beyonce is so innovative yet she has to steal black women's creative style. So much for black female empowerment

Anonymous said...

Proud of her👍🏽

Anonymous said...

Nothing was stolen. She doesn't own the publishing. Someone got paid but it wasn't her. She should talk about the person who stole the publishing

Why didn't Kelis sue Pharrel?

Anonymous said...

@10:03 She did in fact address Pharrell and Chad for stealing her publishing's. As an artist to another artist Beyonce could have given her a heads up out of respect! To be honest she should have enlisted Kelis to write some lyrics too while she was at it...That album is garbage! And I'm not even hatin'. I wanted to see what she would do with a dance album. Turns out nothing that hasn't been done before with absolute rubbish content.

Beyonce fans are crazy and biased. If this was Miley Cyrus or any white singer that stole creative content we would be saying its appropriation. But because it's Beyonce there's all these excuses. She's supposed to be an icon why does she need to do this to her peers.

@language police.....thissa gossip blog so i speak it how i want u you receive it! If we were on a different forum & the subject matter was more serious, then I'll break out the proper English using the correct past participles.
I get it tho' cuz i cringe at a lot of sh*t too but lighten TF up!

It's like if Beyonce started singing like Tems even though she didn't use specific lyrics. We know that Tems has a unique voice so it's like stealing her style. Olivia Rodrigo learned the hard way when she was sued by Paramour and Taylor Swift. It's also about respect amongst peers. She could have had her featured on the song.

Love Kelis, always been fly doing her own thing.
Ever since Beyonce stole Amerie's sound/producer I looked at her differently.

Kelis has such beautiful hair and skin. She is a real talented artist, and has a right to speak her mind, she needs to put some voodoo on Pharell and take his ass to court, so much thievery in the music industry and the artist who have their creative works stolen, has every right to speak up and be pissed off. Beyonce is an MK ultra mind control industry slave, and illuminati puppet like majority of them. Kelis on the other hand is an authentic creative talented artist.

Child cheese. You left NAS because he was about to sacrifice you but then turned around and sacrificed your husband 😐 how sway 🤔

@4:04
I'm a huge Nas fan, but what you said makes no sense and sounds real stupid. Come back to planet earth.

404 How the hell she sacrifice her husband, when he died of cancer? you idiots swear you are so deep with these "revelations" that shit made no sense whatsoever, put the crack pipe down.

I only know of two songs she sang 20ty years ago. What is she talking about? She has no catalog of music that's worth all this attention. By the way send that top back to the 80tys.

Anonymous said...

She’s not even on the song.

Anonymous said...

It doesn't matter if she was a one hit wonder. Obviously Beyonce was inspired that she used her track, so evidently she is worth this attention. Sit yo ass down.

I think this right here is the very reason no one reached out. Imagine seeing her plate full, don’t fool with her on a personal level, probably didn’t even check on her after her husband died, but wanna hit her up about a song she has no rights to? All this and the song reminds me nothing of Milkshake. A song crazy Kelis is acting like was stolen, but was originally for Brittany Spears. Calm down sis.

Anonymous said...

Doesn't matter. She has every right to feel this way, and Pharrell is known for sampling music without artist permission too (i.e. Marvin Gaye). Fuck them. If the shoe were on the other foot ya'll would be caping for them--definitely crying racism if the person was white doing it.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm!! But when husband died and was dying we heard crickets..

Can Nas see Knight?

Team Kelis all day. The innovation in style and authentic creativity. One hit wonder sure had a lasting impact on the industry. Females with more records and hits still can’t punch up to Kelis level.

Anonymous said...

Lmao @ 10:27. All facts. Her husband detailed his cancer ordeal and she posted her life every mf day like he was left on his own to die and he did. She never said ONE word , rip, nothing!!! Just continues her life like a fly landed but now someone uses 1.2 seconds of a 30 year song you don't own and all this energy!!! Bird ass broad

Anonymous said...

She looks amazing!

Not sure if people are really listening to what Kelis was saying. The post was definitely more about Chad (who she called an ameba) and Pharrell (who she called petty). She also acknowledged that she doesn't own the publishing. What she IS saying is that folks know that the Neptunes stole some of her publishing, but someone should have had the decency to give her a heads up. To her, it was about common courtesy....especially if they all know each other.

We have already seen how Pharrell gets down, i.e. Marvin Gaye's estate and Blurred Lines. It's just a reminder about "Industry rule number four thousand and eighty, Record company people are shady. So kids watch your back 'cause I think they smoke crack, I don't doubt it, look at how they act" (Q-Tip's Verse, A Tribe Called Quest, Check the Rhime).
