Tristan Thompson, who became his younger brother Amari Thompson's primary caregiver after their mother Andrea's death in January, filed to become Amari's legal guardian.
The NBA free agent, who is the former partner of Khloé Kardashian, filed legal documents Friday in which he requested sole legal guardianship of his 17-year-old brother.
In court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Tristan, 32, claimed that their father Trevor Thompson has been absent from his younger brother's life since 2014, leaving Tristan as the teenager's closest living family member who is able to provide his required care.
Amari has epilepsy and other medical conditions requiring round-the-clock support, which Thompson aims to provide via guardianship.
"Amari is a minor and has medical conditions that render him unable to take care of himself or seek gainful employment," the court documents state.
Amari lives with Tristan at his Hidden Hills, California home, per the court documents.
"Appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs," the statement continues. "Further, Amari is set to receive a modest inheritance from his recently deceased mother and a guardian wouldn't be able to manage and invest in Mary's inheritance on his behalf."
According to the court documents, Amari has received $103,475 from his mother's estate. Tristan would take over the needs of protecting the inheritance and managing Amari's care and various medical appointments. Tristan also plans to apply for an application for U.S. citizenship for Amari, who was born in Canada, per the court documents.

The media does not need his permission to access offical, unsealed court documents, post an image of him, or write a story about him. Folks should know that by now. Court records are one thing, medical records are another.

Glad that he didn't abandon his brother and doesn't need the money. Some families would run through the money and neglect the one in need. Shame on his father.

The mom died suddenly and only had a $100k life insurance policy with a disabled child who needs 24 hour care? Wow. This is beyond sad. The father abandoned the child, which is not surprising. Men usually flee the scene once the kid needs more attention form the mother than they do.
I would never take this on. The emotional toll is too much. I would happily hire someone to do this. This is far beyond my scope of expertise. I chose to not have children and this was one of my biggest fears, birthing a defective child that required permanent care.
As for Kristian, he doesn't take care of his own "normal" kid and is expected to care for someone who is permanently disabled? Oh, the irony!! Hire a fulltime nurse for life. Or, put him in an institution that can give him 24hour care.
Honorable of him stepping up. We need more of this, I hope he is awarded sole guardianship.

Most people love their child regardless but all women wish for happy, healthy babies who grow up to be cute and/or rich doctors, lawyers, etc. Look how Flo-Rida treat his own disabled son! I don't think Tristan's intentions are honorable. I think he just wants to make sure he (Tristan) always has some kind of money coming in because he never knows what future careless endeavor of his might produce a child that he'll be financially proven responsible for so he just wants to make sure he always has some "cigarette and gas money" and enough to get a couple of Big Macs and some chili cheese fries from the hamburger stand. TT got too much secksing to do and too many years to do it in and he's not about to sit home wiping the drool from Amari's chin.
