This week pop star Usher was quoted in a new interview admitted TLC rapper Chili broke his heart after turning down his marriage proposal [click here if you missed that].

Back in the late '00s Usher had fallen for stylist Tameka Foster, a few years after his fan-beloved relationship with TLC's Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas has ended. But upon marrying Foster in 2007 he started to face backlash from fans who didn't approve of the relationship.
"I think I became very closed and then felt attacked in many ways," he says of that period. "It was a bit unconventional in a time when I felt like my female fans were judgmental of the woman that I chose."
He still isn't sure what all of the public scrutiny over Foster, who's seven years his senior, stemmed from, though he has his speculations.
"She was a dark-skinned woman, and maybe they didn't want to love her in a way because of maybe some reason that had to do with themselves," he hypothesizes, "I don't know. Or maybe she was not the best reference because of how she handled herself. That's not for me to be concerned about. I did my part and what I thought was right."
Around that time the couple sat for an in-depth interview with Essence where Usher reflected on how the backlash impacted their relationship. “Ours is not a typical love story, but it is a true one," he told the publication at the time. "Tameka and I have been fortunate enough to go through the thick of it in the beginning. We’ve had that opportunity to huddle up as a team, to make sure that we’re clear and speak as one voice.”
The star followed his heart but in the end things didn't work out between the pair, who divorced in 2009.

It’s not because she’s dark skin. Chili is brown skin or dark skin and that was a better fit. This Tamika woman was old and decrepit. She left her married life and children for you. And that’s why we didn’t approve. So stop the nonsense with this dark skin business!!!!
Folks apologize for how Britney was treated, but Tameka took a public beating as well, in part because she wasn't Chili. People were still rooting for him to get back with her. I honestly believe that if Tameka was light skinned, the public would have been more kind, or at least accepting, of her. People called her all kinds of ugly, but I've seen her out, and she's really quite stunning. She's just a chocolate Black woman. Tameka literally almost died, getting plastic surgery, trying to appease the masses. Plenty of white and light skinned people are given a pass. But if you're dark skinned, people really scrutinize you.

I remember ppl saying she looked like a man. Chilli was prettier and everyone knew her from TLC. He wasn't ready as a young to get tired down. He got caught cheating.
I really do feel for him coming up in show biz as a kid and growing up in the public eye. That's got to be hard to be under a magnifying glass while trying to explore who you love.

Good on Usher for speaking his truth. My only problem is that he decided to get married just as this came out. As another poster wrote in another thread, that was a messy move.
Tamika dodged the green bullet. WIth Usher's mentors she is lucky she left on her on accord.

People felt she wasn't pretty enough after Chilli. She was dogged by Black women. It was so unfair.
Why should anyone care about whom he chose to share his life with? She will always be the mother of his 1st & 2nd born children. Although she had other children and a previous marriage, when she and Usher split that was one more broken Black family with children and one less 2 parent household. That's nothing to celebrate.
It was definitely colorism. They wanted Usher to be with a light bright. Tamika was scandalous tho so no sympathy from me.

I think it was a combination of a lot of things, plus Tameka came off as bossy and pushy in interviews. And if I remember correctly, she didn't get along with his mother. But her being a dark sister that's not exotical looking like Chilli was the last straw for the fans.
Funny how he has nothing positive to say about her in this interview. He made Chilli sound like his dream girl who was damn near perfect but Tameka was "not the best reference because of how she handled herself." It's these types of things that make people assume there's an element of colorism involved. Where's the love for the mother of your kids Ursher?

I was in Atlanta back then..folks didnt like her because she left her family and children to be with Usher.
