Kandi Burruss' Revival of The Wiz on Broadway Off to a Great Start

Last year Kandi Burruss and husband Todd Tucker received their first Tony Award after producing the August Wilson play 'Fences' on Broadway, and then announced they were producing a revival of The Wiz [click here if you missed that].

The play started previewing last month, opens tonight and is already coming in hot as the second highest earning new show on Broadway last week...

Broadway‘s spring newcomers continued pulling in the city’s tastemakers, tourists and the merely curious last week, with overall box office down about 10% from the previous week but most new shows filling at least 90% of their seats.
Topping the newcomers was Cabaret with Eddie Redmayne as the Emcee (full title of the revival: Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club), fill all seats at the August Wilson Theatre and grossing $1,731,227 for seven previews. Opening night is April 21.
Second highest earner of the previewing or just-opened shows was The Wiz, grossing $1,288,057 for seven performances at the Marquis, with attendance at 93% of capacity. Opening night is April 17.

The Wiz on Broadway stars Wayne Brady as the Wiz, Deborah Cox as Glenda, Melody A. Betts as Evilene, Nichelle Lewis as Dorothy, Karl Raymar Freeman as the Lion, Phillip Johnson Richardson as the Tin Man and Avery Johnson as the Scarecrow.

I saw this on Sunday morning two weeks ago. The talent was there but the costumes and theater set were nothing to brag about.
She wants an EGOT. Maybe this will help her get one.

I saw it in San Francisco a couple months back. Deborah Cox was the good witch and Wayne Brady as The Wiz. The young lady that plays Dorothy runs are impeccable. It’s different, but I enjoyed it. Although I had the pleasure of seeing it with Stephanie Mills as the lead as well.

In the new one The Cowardly Lion stills the show.

I saw it in San Diego in January. What a great way to start this year. Can't you feel a brand new day??

Fabulous vocals. Loved to see an all Black cast.

Go see it!
