Celebrating Claudette Colvin who was arrested for refusing to sit in the Colored section of the bus in Montgomery, AL nine months before the arrest of Rosa Parks....
I remember learning about this. She was an unwed teenage mom, and too dark to be the face of change. Mind you, I think she was absolutely beautiful. But today, black Americans can’t jog without being criminalized so I understand why they didn’t use her from her being a teenage mom pov.
The out come for her to be recognized was long over due. Even as an unwed teenage Black mother with not much education, she stood up for her rights. LOLO
Not that it should have even mattered but she wasn’t even that dark! Black folks can be so ridiculous when it comes to skin color, but then like to pretend it doesn’t matter when darker complected people address the discrimination they face from their own. This young ladies name should ALWAYS be next to Rosa Parks’ in the history books. And I don’t care that she was an unwed pregnant teen because a married mad should have known better.
We are more accepting of our complexions and celebrate our brown skin now, but back then yall know they weren’t trying to be darker than a paper bag, and hated their natural hair. Ijs. We still need work, but we have come a long way.
That wasn't the case, y'all. The SCLC, NAACP, CORE, SNCC, NUL and many other Civil Rights groups from the 1950's and 1960's wanted someone who wouldn't distract from what they were trying to do to build cases and notoriety for the clear discriminatory acts towards people of color for those who lack color, and Ms. Colvin's perceived sinful act of being an unmarried teenaged mother would have not helped their case that they were trying to make that would ultimately become The Civil Rights Movement that helped People of Color and other groups that felt discriminated against gain the rights we have and non-Blacks are trying desperately to rob us of present day.

We learned about her in elementary school.
It's a damn shame that it took so long for her to be pardoned. The Black collective should have pushed for her pardon decades ago.
We celebrate you, ma'am 💐 🫡

Her own community didn’t find her worthy. How sad is that?
Rosa Parks has a statue ffs but not this woman?!
