Is Dwayne Johnson headed for the Oscars?
Judging by the rapturous reaction to his performance as wrestler Mark Kerr in “The Smashing Machine” at the Venice Film Festival on Monday night, that seems to be the consensus out of Italy.
The 53-year-old actor sobbed uncontrollably as the audience on the Lido erupted into 15-minute standing ovation, one of the longest at this year’s festival so far.
Johnson, who once performed as the WWE wrestler known as the Rock, has been the star of such commercial fare as “The Mummy,” “Black Adam” and “Baywatch.” But he goes much deeper in his next project, which will be released by A24 in November, as a ’90s fighter with demons.
Johnson stars opposite Emily Blunt in the film, who plays Kerr’s girlfriend Dawn Staples. During the ovation, Benny Safdie — the film’s director — hugged both his stars and joined Johnson in shedding tears of joy as the clapping continued. Adding to the waterworks, Kerr also wept as the credits rolled.

That looks intense. Not sure I want to see though. LOLO
He plays the same exact character exactly the same way in every single movie. That wig is pitiful.
he look skinny in the face. i hope he's ok
He’s another Trump supporter, but he don’t wanna talk about that anymore. He even wanted to get into politics at one point. Everybody thought they could run after Obama’s success. Ha!
Love me some him, he can do no wrong in my eyes.
So i saw the Denzel - Spike movie last week and this trailer came on. I was like, “hmm, who is this actor… somebody new to the scene bc i don’t think I’ve ever seen him before!” I saw Dwayne’s name come up and I was thinking, “hmm I guess he’s on this movie too as like, the brother or another fighter?” Man, i didn’t know he was the main character! He’s got good makeup bc he clearly had me fooled.
@2:40 PM 😎 Stevie Wonder you funny
Ain't no way you didn't miss that wig.
Looks interesting. I think I will see it.
I guess I like the Rock. He's grown on me over the years but he's not aging well at all and his skin is looking real leathery these days. All that juicing may be catching up to him.
@2:40 I saw Spike's movie too and I thought it sucked big time. Even my man who's a huge Denzel fan was disappointed. Overall the acting was good for the most part but the story line got stupid AF after the first 30 minutes. And anybody, I mean ANYBODY, could've played ASAP's role. He brought absolutely nothing to the table I still don't even understand the hype over that clown. Rih must got some great pull because all he did was play himself.
I hear you 8:15. The movie was ahem, just off. I was expecting it to turn or flow like Inside Man but then it had like Malcolm X soundtrack music. It was just all weird and I couldn’t tell where it was going or why it was going like that. It’s weird spike and Denzel reunited for this… but I did like asap a bit after this. He’s interesting and he looks just like Leslie Odom, who I Looooooove. Go figure. But I guess I’m Stevie Wonder round here tho
