She opened the doors that many Black women in politics have walked through. She was resilient and faced so many obstacles and persisted in spite of them all.
I can’t speak for NY as a state, but in my Brooklyn public schools she was a staple in the curriculum. My black female teachers made sure we know about Harriet, Madame CJ, Rosa, and Shirley. Representation matters.
