Black Viewers Did Not Boycott the Oscars

Earlier this week reports showed ratings for the Academy Awards show were the lowest in eight years, which many attributed to the boycott launched by Jada Pinkett-Smith over the lack of diversity in Oscar nominations [click here if you missed that].

Turns out Black viewership only dropped a tiny bit...

According to Nielsen Black viewers only dropped by 2% this year with 3.22 African Americans tuning in.

Considering more than 34 million viewers watched in total would it have even mattered if 3. 22 million Black viewers tuned out?

How can you tell if someone black tuned it? Do they have GPS in the t.v.s now?

it's the Nielson Boxes! If you have one in your home they know your stats. When you consent to a Nielson box in your home they make a profile. Like how many people in the house, ages, etc. That's how they can compile those stats

1. If you use a "main" provide such as DirecTV, Comcast, etc, you gave them your social security number. Enough Said.

2. For things like Twitter or online viewings, where you haven't necessarily submitted your information other than age, they use your search history, pages likes, friends, etc., put the information in an algoithm, to,essentially, "guess" your profile information.

To piggyback on 9:07am's post, the Nielsen ratings is about as misleading as a vote count in Florida. My best friend's parents had one, and my Critical Thinking professor currently has one. According to them, when you're selected and approved, they outfit you with a box for 5 years and you get broke off with a check every month or bi-montly (I forget).

They put a box in 18,000 homes. In 2009, it was calculated that there's about 117,500,000 households in the U.S. and I think the current number is estimated to be around 133 million. So going off of the 2009 estimate, the ratings are based off of what 1.5% of the entire population of America is watching.

So as you can imagine, they base the total number of black viewers off of the number of black viewers with Nielson boxes that tuned in for more than 10/15 minutes or whatever the current requirement is to register a rating.

So basically, you have to take these stats with a grain of muthafuggin salt, because when the sample size is barely 1% of the population, you realize how powerful and important context and sample size are.

So when you hear TV ratings, think in terms of 18,000 households, not 120,000,000 households or 300,000,000 people.

I'ont even pay attention to any of that shit, or the political polls, until I see the sample size.
