She should have corrected her statement during Idol. Too much time has elapsed to retract anything said or interpreted back then. It's one thing to read a contract and another to comprehend what you've just read. Yes, this is where lawyers come into play, but you still need some semblance of comprehension skills.
Not saying you have to read a novel in your spare time, but reading encompasses our everyday lives. Not knowing basic fundamental reading and writing skills could hinder you from getting a job and understanding important personal documentation that you will encounter on a daily basis, i.e. road signs, road maps, etc. Each state in the union has a free literacy program. People should take advantage of it.
