“I don’t think Marvin is a very happy spirit right now,” says Janis, who was married to the singer from 1977-1981 and claims they remained off and on until seven months before his 1984 death. “This is the last thing he would want to have happen.”
According to Janis, both the play “My Brother Marvin” and the upcoming Julien Temple film, “Sexual Healing,” will focus on the final years of Marvin’s life, which were plagued by depression and drug abuse. She’s especially bothered by the play, which allegedly presents Janis in a negative light.
“I haven’t read the script, but it’s supposed to be based on (sister Zeola Gaye’s) book and I did read the book from cover to cover, and it was very difficult to read,” she tells Confidenti@l. She called it sensational and questioned its accuracy. “Some of the characterizations, like saying Marvin’s father killing him was a ‘mercy killing,’ you can only imagine how that makes the kids feel,” she says, referring to her and Marvin’s 38-year-old daughter, Nona, and 37-year-old son, Frankie. “It makes me feel bad enough.”
Janis admits Marvin’s final years were dark.
“It wasn’t always the greatest, but it was tough times for him and for everyone,” she admits.
Janis also tells us she’s “disappointed” that “Sexual Healing” may soon start filming with Jesse L. Martin in the lead role, but she’s thankful to Lenny Kravitz, who was slated to play that part before stepping down last week. “Ultimately, I think it was Lenny’s heart and soul and conscience that caused him to step away,” she says. “Hopefully, that touches Jesse in the same way.”

I think Marvin's story should be told; the good, the bad, and the ugly. His story might save someone from going through what he went through. When you are an entertainer I believe your fans should know the entire story, not part of it so that others in their life can save face.
@1:51PM I thought the same thing until I continued reading the article. It looks like Marvin's family doesn't want this film done period. It seems that the whole point of this film is to focus on Marvin Gaye's drug addiction, last days and death which is very hurtful. I wish that his family would take a moment to look at the bigger picture. Tragedy sells. They should hire a good attorney and reap what ever financial benefits could come from telling this sad story instead of just wishing that the movie would go away.

Unfortunately, Marvin's life was already an opened book. Many people have shared their experience with him and about his personal life. So I don't understand why Mrs. Gaye wants to act like his life with it's ups and downs, had been kept secret from the public.
Marvin's life story, no matter how crazy it was, is a story that should be told. Besides being a great artist, his story would allow people to learn some life lessons as well.
i am with the gaye family... his whole life should be told, not the last 5 yrs. this man lived 44 almost 45 yrs killed the day before his birthday, and to discredit the first 40 yrs of his life and how he became marvin gaye to only concentrate on the last 5 years is a disservice to the man legacy.

It's quite sad when you have to leave out the good and sensationalize the bad to have a story heard. There are some people out there who want to know the genius behind Marvin Gaye, not just the smut. SMH
Now come on...I agreed with Lenny not being a perfect fit for the role but Jesse? He was born to play Marvin. He is an accomplished on screen and stage. Who does she want to play him Denzel? He's too old. Instead of trying to block production she needs to embrace the story being told to set an example for young artist. Lord knows, Chris Brown and many others need to watch it multiple times once it is released..

if you make a movie of the last 4-5 yrs of his life you will miss out on his youth, dc in the 40's, his mamma and his strict pastor daddy who had an out side kid and his mom had one too. his young man yrs,. Tammi Dianna his first wife barry's sis, their son his doo whop days his hit of the 60's. motown. to concentrate on the yrs of exile drug use and his death. the young kids wont know who he is or his great talents or how he became marvin gaye.

Good pick for the role. Jesse is leading-man handsome and very good, very experienced actor. Plus he's got musical talent as well. I'd like to see what he could do with the role. He understands the family issues I'm sure.

^Saldana has already begun to film as Simone. Her makeup looks a mess and there is nothing about Saldana as Simone that will draw me and my money to see it. India Arie is a much better pick. She may not be an actress or known for acting, but I wouldn't hesitate to go see her play Simone.
Sounds like Janis doesn't want something played out on screen that many people already know. I guess I can understand some of it, because she was so young when she first hooked up with a married Marvin, but supposedly her mother encouraged it.
Jesse L. Martin is a good pick for Marvin and will do a fine job, but if the movie isn't done right it could still be a flop. I wonder who will portray Janis.
