John Singleton Dead at 51

Director John Singleton died today after being taken off life support by his family...

From NY Daily News
Filmmaker John Singleton, known for directing “Boyz n the Hood,” died Monday after being taken off life support following a stroke, his publicist said.
The 51-year-old director had been in a coma after suffering a stroke on April 17 while at a Los Angeles hospital for another health concern. He died peacefully and surrounded by friends, his family said in a statement shared by publicist, Shannon Barr, on Monday.
Singleton, who was also a screenwriter and producer, made history in 1992 when he became the first black director nominated for an Academy Award and, at 23, the youngest nominee in that category for the 1991 drama “Boyz n the Hood," his directorial debut. The critically acclaimed film follows the lives of three teenage boys in Los Angeles and addresses questions of race, violence and relationships.

This one's a hard one to take. Exceptional director from a very young age who somehow managed to make many of his actors exceed their normal capabilities through great storytelling, scripts and directing. His craft made an impact worldwide and it's even more poignant that he was taken at a relatively young age. RIP John Singleton

I remembered he jumped on his ex-wife and had to do a film just to get off.

This is a prime example of why you need a health care proxy and a living will. His family was fighting over his money within 10 days of him being in a "coma" and in under 2 weeks they've pulled him off life support.

Health care proxy. Living will. Very necessary.

So is the black community going to raise him to sainthood and compare him to Jesus like they did Nipsey Hussle or Nah? I doubt it.

Rest in Eternity to an incredibly talented and intelligent black man. Thank you for using your gifts to educate young black folks on the toxicity of the blsvk community and inspiring them to do better!

Also didn't know that he was married to Akosua Busia, the woman who played Nettie in The Color Purple. It was only for one year, but just found that interesting.

Black people put down the salt, sugar and the fried food. Eat fresh vegetables, fruit and grains. DRINK WATER! It really is that simple...

They should have left him on life support - two weeks is not too long. I give them the side eye for this.
