Nicki Minaj Tracy Chapman Copyright Case Headed to Trial

Two years ago singer / songwriter Tracy Chapman filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against rapper Nick Minaj after Nicki sent an unreleased track with an uncleared Tracy Chapman sample to a New York radio station [click here if you missed that].

Now the case  is headed to trial...

This week a judge ruled against Tracy Chapman's assertion that the mere existence of the track constituted copyright infringement, but agreed Nicki leaking the track to a radio station was another issue completely.

Text messages between Nicki Minaj and Hot 97 DJ Funk Master Flex show a coordinated release and the single was also promoted on social media [click here if you missed that].

The case is now headed to trial.

Niki thought she could steal Tracy's most popular song, release it on her record, and FORCE her into accepting it AFTER the fact. True writers and musicians are veeeery protective of their art. You don't steal and then try to force acceptance after the fact. Instead, of showing your twat, you should sit in a room somewhere and learn to write. Snoop Dogg had the audacity to disrespect Prince for not allowing him to sample his music. No talent @ss rappers need to bite off of others because they are not REAL artists. No true musical talent...Even Pavarotti honored Tracy by having her sing that song with him. The videos on YouTube. Tracy is global. This fight is about principle. You don't steal.

I agree, and support Tracy. All these rappers feel entitled about taking others art to create their own. If Tracy said no then its no. Nicki is ridiculous.

Is Tracy still making music? Her last hit was about 3 or 4 decades ago.

5:14 It doesn't matter when Tracy had a hit. She should be happy that Nicki wants to use her sample for her trash ass vulgar music? Tracy should be flattered and grateful? Please, I think not... Tracy is a huge staple in the music community. Youtube and Google are your friends.

Tracy is the only Black female rock superstar we had next to Tina Turner. Nicki is a run of the mill hip hop industry prostitute. Pay what you owe, you plastic, clown wig wearing hoe!

@5:14, Her music is so popular around the globe that she can still sell out arenas even in non English speaking countries with old hits...She is extremely popular, kind of like Sade. We don't listen to Sade for her new hits, we want her old hits. Some music is timeless like Tracy's Give me one good reason, Fast Car, Baby can I hold you etc;
