According to reports Nichelle Nichols' son, Kyle Johnston, donated a portion of his mother's ashes for a memorial spaceflight to honor Nichols, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, and James “Scotty” Doohan.
The launch is expected later this year and Celestis, the company behind the mission, is inviting fans to write messages about how they were inspired by Nichols that will be sent aboard the Voyager for the Enterprise Memorial Flight [Go here to leave your message].

Kinda weird… even for the ashes of a real astronaut.
