The Grio Downsized Following Amanda Seales Incident

Earlier this month pop culture critic Amanda Seales called out Byron Allen's The Grio blog for using online social commentary as the basis for an op-ed criticizing Amanda's candid admission of feeling slighted about not being welcome in Black Hollywood spaces [click here if you missed that].

In totally unrelated news, The Grio is going through major changes...

From The Wrap

The Grio, Byron Allen’s multiplatform media outlet catering to Black Americans, laid off staffers in a restructuring effort that is also eliminating the managing editor’s position, according to an individual with knowledge of the situation.
“The axe is falling at TheGrio,” an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. Members of the podcast and video team have also been laid off along with managing editor Christy Oglesby, the individual said.
“Allen Media Group is making strategic changes to better position the company for growth that will result in expense and workforce reductions across all divisions,” the company said in a statement to TheWrap. The spokesperson declined the specific layoffs.

A ain't got nothing to do with B. Amanda does not have enough pull to impact The Grio.

Thank goodness. They need to ditch Touré and a couple other writers. The Grio is better than The Root, but still. Hope they keep Michael Harriot, Apryl Ryan, and some of the serious writers on black culture, sports and politics, but they can ditch a few of them that I refuse to read anymore.

They should hire Amanda…

Michael Harriot is better than The Root but The Griot overall is awful. Horrible junky layout. Poor writing. Toure'. Do better, Byron. You've got the money.

The Root used to have serious articles by decent black journalists (some who moved to the Grio) now the Root mostly write fluff pieces. You can have it.
