R.I.P. Mama Mosie Burks

Mama Mosie Burks, a gospel music pioneer, has died.
Burks, 92, was best known for her performances with the Mississippi Mass Choir.
"Mama Mosie's powerful voice, unshakable faith and joyful spirit touched hearts around the world and helped define the sound and soul of the Mississippi Mass Choir," according to a Facebook post by the choir. "Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come."
Her voice can be heard on some of the Mississippi Mass Choir's popular songs, including "They Got the Word," "I'm Not Tired Yet," and "This Morning When I Rose."
A public visitation will be held Tuesday, July 15 at Jackson Memorial Funeral Service on Woodrow Wilson Avenue in Jackson from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. A musical celebration will follow from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Greater Fairview Baptist Church on Newport Street in Jackson. The funeral for Mama Mosie Burks will be held the following Wednesday, July 16, at Greater Bethlehem Temple Apostolic Faith Church on Robinson Street in Jackson. The service will begin at 11 a.m.

I don't pretend to be a religious person. I did not grow up in the church. But that performance moved me. RIP, Mama Mosie Burks.

Gospel music, with its double entendres, helped us plow through Jim Crow laws. I wonder what will get us through Project 2025 laws.
