Spencer played Dee, the precocious and meddling younger sister on What’s Happening!!, for three seasons beginning in 1976. Loosely based on the 1975 film Cooley High, the series started out as a summer replacement on ABC. After it ended, a spinoff of the show titled What’s Happening Now!! was ordered, running from 1985 to 1988. Spencer reprised her role, recurring as a college-aged Dee for 16 episodes.
In 1996, she pivoted from acting and became a veterinarian, and though she considered herself to be semi-retired from the business, she still occasionally acted. Her other TV credits include The Brady Bunch Hour and Days of Our Lives. She also played a vet in the 1997 James L. Brooks movie As Good As It Gets.

RIP Dr. Spencer. I attended college with her at UC Davis. She was very low key and committed to her studies in veterinary science. Condolences to the family.

This actually hurts my heart. My childhood memories of her had me very glad to see ppl like me on the screen at the time. I'm familiar with her various health ordeals over the years & was glad she'd persevered through them all, now I'm heartbroken she succumb to one of her health ordeals. I'd just watched a marathon of What's Happening!" in honor of Dr. Dee turning the milestone age of 60 two months ago & now another celebration of her life may be in order.
Sleep well, Dr. Danielle "Dee Thomas" Spencer & thank you for the memories you helped provide for me in my childhood.

And she overcame so much too! During the 1st run of What's Happening, she was in a horrible car accident that left her in a brief coma plus killed her stepdad. You fought a good fight!
