One of James Brown's Trustees Is Going To Jail

David Cannon, formerly one of the three trustees of James Brown's estate, will serve six months in Aiken, SC, for contempt of court after failing to pay back a $350,000 royalty check that was accidentally mailed to him. He claimed he was unable to pay back the money despite paying a contractor $866,000 in cash to build his house in Honduras in 2007. Cannon also failed to turn over financial documents related to Brown's estate.

James Brown Auction Disappoints

The James Brown Estate auction, which was expected to fetch anywhere from $1 to $2 million dollars, hauled in just $857,688 yesterday with 97% of the items offered sold. A judge cleared the way for the auction after it was bitterly contested by James' former trustees and some of his children, who felt the money should go to James' I Feel Good trust as opposed to paying off the accumulated tax debts and expenses the estate has racked up since James' death on Christmas day 2006. Some of the Brown children are particularly upset because they claim they were told to list items they felt should stay off the auction block but said their lists were ultimately ignored. The children felt certain items should have been saved to create a Graceland type museum for the Godfather of Soul.

Glitch In The James Brown Auction

The auctioning of the late James Brown's personal effects has been halted because of a dispute about where the money should go. James' longtime lawyer, Buddy Dallas, and his former road manager, Alford Bradley, say money from the sale should to go to Brown's estate, in contrast to James' will that specified the money go to his 'I Feel Good Trust' to educate poor children. The case will be argued in court on Monday.

James Brown Proven the Father

James Brown you ARE the father. DNA tests prove James Brown II was indeed sired by the late great James Brown, so even though little man and his mama were left out of the will, they are entitled to some cash, if there's any left, that is.

In About 30 Days

We should know whether or not James Brown II is the biological son of the late Godfather of Soul, James Brown. Tomie Ray Hynie has been ordered by a judge to submit her 6 year old son for DNA testing. Tommie Ray has maintained all along that she is not opposed to testing her child, as long as all the other children of James Brown are tested, too.

James Brown Auction Date Set

A judge has ordered James Brown's personal belongings be auctioned off on August 1st to help pay mounting legal bills and overdue tax debts. Among the 400 items going on the block is a lock of James Brown's hair, 78 pairs of shoes and boots, a 1974 Mercedes Benz, a poem from Muhammad Ali and a home owned by the Godfather of Soul. By the time this is all over, there won't be anything left for his family to fight over. And what ever happened to that paternity test for little James Jr?

James Brown Estate Legal News

Last week, an attorney for five of James Brown’s children questioned the late soul singer’s ex-trustees during a court hearing on whether they hid one of Brown’s earlier wills. The former trustees dismissed the allegation, saying the only valid will was the one filed in 2000, which left clothes, jewelry, boats and automobiles for Brown’s six adult children. The children were largely left out of the financial portion of that will, which leaves the bulk of the soul singer’s money to charitable trusts. Attorneys for the children argue that earlier wills drafted by their father cast doubt on whether he truly wanted to leave his estate to charity. Ex-trustee Alford Bradley, who spent years handling Brown’s financial affairs, said the singer changed his will several times. When Mr. Brown would fall out with somebody, he would change his will," Bradley said.

Where Is James Brown's Money

A company that handles royalties and income from commercials and other projects for James Brown's estate has significantly less money than it should, a lawyer for the late soul singer's family said. Much of the money that was supposed to be going to James Brown Enterprise Inc. instead ended up in a company established by a former trustee accused of misappropriating $7 million from the singer, attorney Louis Levenson said Thursday after a court hearing to sort through Brown's finances. The company collected money earned by Brown's endeavors while he was alive and continued to do so after he died on Christmas, but never gave the money to the singer, Levenson said. David Cannon, who quit working for the estate in August after being accused of taking money from it, testified that Brown's work earned millions of dollars a year. He said he would give Brown $100,000 a month for "walking-around spending money" because the singer had difficulty managing his finances.

And Baby Makes Three

Add another person to the list of kids fathered by James Brown. Last month twelve people took paternity tests to prove their lineage to James Brown and yesterday one more turned up positive. That makes three kids acknowledged by the James Brown estate after his death. No word yet on whether or not lil James Brown Jr., the child James allegedly fathered with his companion Tomi Rae Hynie, is James' kid.

James Brown Got Two More Kids

About twelve people have taken DNA tests to establish paternity to James Brown and two of them came back positive, several negative, and others are still pending. I'm kicking myself right now because I totally had a picture of his newest, oldest daughter, 45-year-old LaRhonda Petitt, and I lost it. She looks exactly like him, too. Anyway, strangely enough, Tomi Rae Hynie's son James Brown II has yet to be submitted for testing. James' lawyer says James never claimed little James anyway and that's why he and Tomi weren’t included in his will. The lawyer also said James NEVER referred to the child as his son, but called him "little man" instead.

James Brown's Widow Spotted with Magic Don Juan

James Brown's Funeral Still Isn't Paid For

The trust handling James Brown's estate owes more than $70,000 for his elaborate funeral and care of his body for nearly three months before it was laid to rest in March, according to the funeral director who handled the soul singer's arrangements.
"I'm just waiting on them to get some of this mess straightened out," said Charles Reid, manager of the C.A. Reid Funeral Home in Augusta, Ga., which handled Brown's funeral. "I really haven't pushed the issue, even though I'd like to have my money."
Some of the funeral costs have already been paid and trustees have mailed a cheque to Reid this week covering the outstanding balance, Brown's longtime adviser and trustee Buddy Dallas said Wednesday.
"It was the children that ran up a funeral bill of over $150,000, not the trustees," Dallas said. "We've done our very best to do what we could to accommodate the creditors. There's no great big pile of money or surplus of money just lying around."

James Brown's Constant Companion Wants Half

Three weeks after his death, James Brown is still chillin' in the front room of his house on Beech Island in South Carolina. But it's not as weird as it sounds. He's not buried yet because his family is building a mauselum on the estate for his final resting place. They say it should be ready in a month. In the mean time, Tomi Rae Hynie, James' long time companion, who, along with her five year old son James Jr, were left out of James' will, is suing for half of the James Brown Estate with 7 percent of the remaing half going to her son James Jr. I can't wait for that paternity test to come back.
